The law goes into effect in August. "There are very good reasons why we have to limit the use of facial recognition. It can cause harm to people already in prison or who are about to go to prison," California Assemblymember Mark Stone said. The law will ban the use of the technology in the first phase of California's criminal justice system. California now joins four other states that have passed bans on the use of facial recognition technology by law enforcement in their state. In the last year, New York, New Jersey, Nevada and Massachusetts have passed laws prohibiting facial recognition use by law enforcement. The technology involves collecting a person's photograph and using software to search databases that contain mug shots and other photos of criminal suspects. Critics say this type of technology, which is already used in the Los Angeles area, could make prisons, jails, airports and other public places more dangerous. Facial recognition software could be used to identify and track people, regardless of whether they are considered suspects or not. Related: Should you keep your Facebook privacy be359ba680
